Star Trek Comics Checklist

Star Trek Coloring Books

These aren't quite comics, but they're close enough, since some of them have a story in addition to artwork. I need your help to expand this list of published Star Trek coloring books and other activity products on the next page, particularly if there is some kind of story associated with the item.

What is a coloring book? Wikipedia says "A coloring book is a type of book containing line art to which people are intended to add color using crayons, colored pencils, marker pens, paint or other artistic media. Traditional coloring books and coloring pages are printed on paper or card."

What is a colouring book? Same thing but Commonwealth English.

What is a Star Trek coloring book? A book containing Star Trek line art which you can bring to colorful life any way you like.

What types of Star Trek coloring books are available?

   1) Licensed print coloring books: Saalfield Publishing released the first licensed Star Trek coloring book in 1967. Dark Horse Comics released Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation print coloring books for adults in 2016 and 2017.

   2) Fan-made print coloring books: One of the earliest example of fan-made coloring books is the Star Trek Concordance Color Book, published in 1973, with art by many fan artists.

   3) Canonical coloring books: Back in the day NBC-TV affiliates had a coloring contest with pictures to color printed in local newspapers and in recent years, CBS Studios has released several coloring books in print and PDF formats for their animated television shows, Lower Decks and Prodigy.

   4) Fan-made digital coloring books: Fan and professional artists post their Star Trek art to color on websites and on social media. Notable fan-made digital coloring books with original art are Kail Tescar's TAS Coloring Book and Jon Adams' The World's Longest and Most Exciting Chief O'Brien at Work Coloring Book.

   5) Coloring page websites: If you search for "star trek coloring pages" you will find many sites that post pages of line art from old Star Trek coloring books which you can download, print and color.

   6) Unlicensed print coloring books: Publishing platforms like Amazon's CreateSpace are the source of many new Star Trek coloring books. The line art is usually copied from licensed Star Trek publications without permission. You can purchase these bootleg books at Amazon, Etsy and eBay, but buyer beware, quality may be poor.

   7) That's a comic book not a coloring book: The Star Trek Comic Album published by World Distributors in 1974 has a tagline on the cover that says "ALSO SUITABLE FOR COLORING AND CRAYONING". If you have a copy of this book you can color the line art of three Gold Key Star Trek comics.

Only Original Series, Next Generation, and Prodigy crews have been featured in licensed print coloring books published in the US and UK. Why aren't there any Deep Space Nine or Voyager or Enterprise or Discovery or Picard or Lower Decks or Strange New Worlds print coloring books? Good question!
